Why We’re Slamming

WRITERS SLAM FOR ALZHEIMER’S is a fundraising event I created to honor my grandmother, Annie Lee McKinney (“Granny Poo”), and to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Association. Because Granny Poo was a licensed minister and lover of the written and spoken word, there was no more fitting a tribute than a spoken word event to honor her and the millions of others affected by Alzheimer’s.

On June 20, 2016, my teammates and I will be hosting Writers Slam for Alzheimer’s: A Night of Poetry and Storytelling, a spoken word event in New York City to celebrate the memories and lives of those affected by Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. Performers will share stories and poems related to Alzheimer’s and the proceeds of the event will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association. Check out our Events page for details!

While caring for Granny Poo, I began to blog and write about our journey. I discovered that there is strength in storytelling. We write and tell stories about our loved ones to make sense of the senseless, to connect when we feel disconnected, to educate, and to survive. Let’s slam Alzheimer’s together, one poem and story at a time!
